Game browsing affects nature conservation because the interests of hunters and gamekeepers often lead to high game stocking rates. However, the compositional effects of game browsing on invertebrates are insufficiently understood. We addressed the dynamics of epigeic spider communities in oak stands planted in newly formed anthropogenic environments under the facultative pressure of browsing game. The study site consisted of an open-cast lignite mine and an overburden deposit in NW Czechia. Using pitfall traps, we examined five habitat types (four transects per habitat type): Quercus robur stands ≥ 25 years of age, 12–24 years of age, and 0–2 years of age; Q. robur stands 12–24 years of age that were heavily damaged by game browsing; and sites subject to spontaneous succession for 12–22 years. We captured 9459 individuals from 134 spider species distributed unevenly across the examined habitat types. The young stands were dominated by Pardosa agrestis, Pardosa monticola, and Oedothorax apicatus, whereas Pardosa prativaga, Pardosa lugubris, Pisaura mirabilis, and Alopecosa cuneata dominated the old stands. The stands damaged by browsing had the highest species richness and were dominated by Alopecosa pulverulenta, Xerolycosa miniata, Alopecosa cuneata, and Trochosa ruricola. All the oak stands were rich in threatened species, with most (26) found in habitats damaged by browsing, whereas the youngest stands hosted the lowest number of threatened species (11). The species dominating old stands still included species that prefer greater canopy openness, such as Pardosa lugubris, whereas numerous species of central European climax oak forests were lacking. In conclusion, we identified oak stands heavily damaged by game browsing as a unique environment that shapes the community of epigeic spiders and that differs from epigeic spider communities of oak stands of various ages and those colonizing areas that are allowed to undergo spontaneous succession.

Celkem bylo odchyceno 7001 jedinců patřících do 16 čeledí a 85 druhů z toho 12 druhů spadalo do Červeného seznamu chráněných druhů v České republice.

This work summarises data on the spider fauna (Araneae) of the Šumava Mts. (Bohemian Forest, Böhmerwald) National Park and Protected Landscape Area (southwest Bohemia), in the period 1858–2023. We abstracted data from all available literature and our own research initiated in 1971. In our own research, we focused on all available habitats, both natural ones and those influenced by humans. These included namely peat bogs, mountains forest, mountain meadows, wetlands, riverbanks and buildings. Altogether, we identified a total of 455 spider species, many of which belong among rare and endangered in the Czech Republic. Overview of their ecological preferences and importance for nature conservation are provided. Within the Czech Republic, nine species are found only in Šumava: Carorita limnaea, Centromerus dilutus, Dictyna major, Gnaphosa badia, Gnaphosa microps, Micaria aenea, Pardosa ferruginea, Pardosa hyperborea and Cybaeus tetricus. The last mentioned species is the first record for the Czech Republic.

Ke sběru vzorků byly použity zemní pasti, prosevy, individuální sběr a determinováni byli i pavouci odchycení do UV přenositelného světelného lapače. Významné nalezené druhy spadající do kategorie LC (téměř ohrožené) jsou pavučenka ploskonosá (Mecopisthes silus) a běžník plochý (Coriarachne depressa), v kategorii VU (zranitelné) jsou plachetnatka kmenová (Agyneta innotabilis), slíďák vřesový (Pardosa nigriceps), mikarie slezská (Micaria silesiaca), skákavka masková (Sitticus saxicola) a skákavka bělovousá (Talavera petrensis). Do kategorie EN (ohrožené) patří tyto druhy: pavučenka chocholkovitá (Walckenaeria monoceros), skálovka brýlová (Drassyllus pumilus) a skákavka šedá (Attulus distinguendus).

The diversity, host specificity, and physiological effects of endosymbiotic bacteria in spiders (Araneae) are poorly characterized. We used 16S rDNA sequencing to evaluate endosymbionts in the cephalothorax and legs of a wolf spider Pardosa agrestis. We tested the effects of feeding once or twice daily with fruit flies, aphids, or starved and compared them to those of syntopically occurring Pardosa palustris. The feeding increased traveled distance up to five times in some of the groups provisioned with food relative to the starved control. The Shannon diversity t-test revealed significant differences between these component communities of the two spider species. The increased frequency of feeding with fruit flies, but not aphids, increased the dominance and decreased the alpha diversity of OTUs. The obligate or facultative endosymbionts were present in all analyzed spider individuals and were represented mostly by Rickettsiella, Rhabdochlamydia, Spiroplasma, and the facultative intracellular parasite Legionella. Vertically transmitted endosymbionts were less common, represented by Wolbachia pipientis and Rickettsia sp. H820. The relative abundance of Mycoplasma spp. was negatively correlated with provisioned or killed aphids. In conclusion, the tissues of Pardosa spiders host tremendously diverse assemblages of bacteria, including obligate or facultative endosymbionts, with yet unknown phenotypic effects.

14 druhů je významných pro ochranu přírody: zápředka Agroeca cuprea, křižáci Gibbaranea bituberculata a Gibbaranea gibbosa, skákavky Asianellus festivus, Heliophanus flavipes, skálovka Drassyllus villicus, plachetnatky Ipa keyserlingi a Trichopterna cito, cedivečka Lathys humilis, běžníci Ozyptila claveata, Thomisus onustus a Xysticus acerbus, slíďák Pardosa bifasciata a zápředník Porrhoclubiona leucaspis.

Exposure to numerous chemicals disrupts the spiders’ locomotion. Spiders, particularly epigeic spiders, are dependent on their locomotory activities to search for prey, hide from their enemies, and perform sexual reproduction and subsequent parental care. Among the best-known compounds that inhibit the locomotion of arthropods are neonicotinoids. Despite spiders are less affected by the neonicotinoids than insects due to the sequence differences in their acetylcholine receptors, they are not resistant to these compounds. We hypothesized that acute exposure to a broad spectrum of neonicotinoids suppresses the traveled distance, mean velocity, and maximum velocity in epigeic spiders. As a model species, we used adults of Pardosa lugubris. We tested commercial formulations of thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, and thiacloprid. We tested each of the neonicotinoids in the maximum and minimum concentrations recommended for foliar applications. We applied them under controlled conditions dorsally by spraying them directly on the spiders or exposing the spiders to the tarsal contact with neonicotinoid residues. Control groups consisted of 31 individuals; treated groups consisted of 10–21 individuals. We found that a broad spectrum of neonicotinoids temporarily suppresses the traveled distance in epigeic spiders. At 1 h after application, all the three tested neonicotinoid insecticides induced declines in the traveled distance, but this effect mostly disappeared when tested at 24 h after the application. The decrease in the traveled distance was associated with substantial temporary decreases in the mean and maximum velocities. Despite differences among modalities, all three insecticides caused multiple adverse effects on the locomotory parameters in any tested concentrations. It remains to test what would be the lowest safe concentration for the chronic exposure to neonicotinoids in epigeic spiders.

In the venom of spiders, linear peptides (LPs), also called cytolytical or antimicrobial peptides, represent a largely neglected group of mostly membrane active substances that contribute in some spider species considerably to the killing power of spider venom. By next-generation sequencing venom gland transcriptome analysis, we investigated 48 spider species from 23 spider families and detected LPs in 20 species, belonging to five spider families (Ctenidae, Lycosidae,  Oxyopidae, Pisauridae, and Zodariidae). The structural diversity is extraordinary high in some species: the lynx spider Oxyopes heterophthalmus contains 62 and the lycosid Pardosa palustris 60 different LPs. In total, we identified 524 linear peptide structures and some of them are in lycosids identical on amino acid level. LPs are mainly encoded in complex precursor structures in which, after the signal peptide and propeptide, 13 or more LPs (Hogna radiata) are connected by linkers. Besides Cupiennius species, also in Oxyopidae, posttranslational modifications of some precursor structures result in the formation of two-chain peptides. It is obvious that complex precursor structures represent a very suitable and fast method to produce a high number and a high diversity of bioactive LPs as economically as possible. At least in Lycosidae, Oxyopidae, and in the genus Cupiennius, LPs reach very high Transcripts Per Kilobase Million values, indicating functional importance within the envenomation process.

Pardosa tenuipes L. Koch, 1882 is a new record for the Czech Republic. Up to 1.7.2021, we included 881 spider species in the araneofauna of the Czech Republic. Paratrachelas maculatus (Thorell, 1875) is an introduced species not treated as a member of Czech spider fauna.

Letální účinky způsobily neonikotinoidy u nymfálních jedinců Pardosa lugubris, a to zejména přípravek Confidor (u tarzální aplikace dokonce i 100% úmrtnost).

Mezi významné nálezy spadající do kategorie VU (ohrožený) patří pavučenka Silometopus elegans, skálovka Gnaphosa lugubris, slíďáci Pardosa paludicola, Piratula knorri a Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata. Do kategorie EN (silně ohrožené) je zařazena plachetnatka Bathyphantes setiger, slíďák Alopecosa schmidti a skálovka Micaria dives.

Data on the spider fauna from the forest ecosystems of the Děvín National Nature Reserve (South Moravia, Czech Republic) are presented. The research was carried out on 15 randomly chosen research plots in oak-hornbeam forest stands within different management regimes. Spider sampling was done by pitfall trapping from May to October 2016. Overall, 3683 adult spiders belonging to 22 families, 70 genera and 116 species were collected. The families Linyphiidae, Lycosidae, Gnaphosidae and Thomisidae exhibited high species richness. The most abundant species were Pardosa lugubris (Walckenaer, 1802) and Trochosa terricola Thorell, 1856. Faunistically remarkable species were Atypus piceus (Sulzer, 1776), Drassyllus villicus (Thorell, 1875), Gnaphosa montana (L. Koch, 1866), Panamomops affinis Miller & Kratochvíl, 1939 and Walckenaeria monoceros (Wider, 1834). The record of Gnaphosa montana is one of the first accounts of this psychrophilic spider from European lowlands. Of the identified species, 23 are listed in the Red List of Threatened Species in the Czech Republic (EN – 1 species, VU – 12 species, LC – 10 species).

Herbicides based upon glufosinate‐ammonium (GLA) are among the world’s most widely used. They also are applied on the most prominent oil crops as desiccants in combination with pod sealants to prevent pod shatter and seed loss close to harvest. Even though these crops occupy a significant part of the world’s agroecosystems, the effects of GLA herbicides on non‐target arthropods, and in particular natural enemies of pests, have been studied very rarely, and such effects of pod sealants have never been studied. We studied in our laboratory mortality as well as prey capture efficiency of the common GLA herbicide and desiccant Basta 15 ® , pod sealant Arrest ® , and a mixture of both on the wolf spider Pardosa agrestis. We found that Basta 15 ® and the mixture had lethal effect on spiders. We also found significant, short‐term effect on predatory activity of spiders after all treatments. Basta 15 ® significantly influenced the amount of captured prey also in the long term. This is the first study showing lethal effect on spiders of the herbicide and herbicide plus pod sealant mixture. This is also the first study examining the effects of pod sealant on the mortality and predatory activity of a pest antagonist. More studies regarding the effects of agricultural chemical mixes are needed to uncover their effects on beneficial organisms existing within agroecosystems.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are the world’s most consumed agrochemicals, and they are commonly used in various agroecosystems, including forests, as well as in urban zones and gardens. These herbicides are sold as formulations containing adjuvants. Other tank-mixing adjuvants (most often surfactants) are commonly added to these formulations prior to application. According to the manufacturers of agrochemicals, such tank mixes (as these are known in agronomic and horticultural practice) have modified properties and perform better than do the herbicides as used alone. The effects of these tank mixes on the environment and on beneficial arthropods are almost unknown. Therefore, we studied whether a herbicide formulation mixed with adjuvant has modified effects on one of the most common genera of ground-dwelling wolf spiders vis- a-vis the herbicide formulation and adjuvants themselves. Specifically, we studied the synergistic effect in the laboratory on the predatory activity (represented by the number of killed flies) of wolf spiders in the genus Pardosa after direct treatment using the glyphosate-based herbicide formulation Roundup klasik Pro ® , Roundup klasik Pro ® in a mixture with the surfactant Wetcit ® , Roundup klasik Pro ® in a mixture with the surfactant Agrovital ® , and the surfactants alone. We found that pure surfactants as well as herbicide-and-surfactants tank mixes significantly decrease the predatory activity of Pardosa spiders in the short term even as Roundup klasik Pro ® did not itself have any such effect. Our results support the hypothesis that plant protection tank mixes may have modified effect on beneficial arthropods as compared to herbicide formulations alone. Therefore, testing of pesticide tank mixes is highly important, because it is these tank mixes that are actually applied to the environment.

června 2017 uspořádalo Oblastní muzeum v Mostě arachnologické exkurze do nejbližšího okolí Mostu a Chomutova, kterých se zúčastnili členové České arachnologické společnosti.

This paper presents spider faunistics from abandoned coppice oak forest stands located along the South Moravia region. Spiders were collected from May to July 2012 by pitfall trapping at eight different localities. We collected 1945 adult spiders representing 20 families, 53 genera, and 90 species. More than one-third of all the species are known to be xerothermophilous with ecological restrictions to open and partly shaded  habitats such as forest-steppe and sparse forests which belong to endangered habitats along central Europe. The most abundant species were Pardosa alacris, Pardosa lugubris and Arctosa lutetiana from the family Lycosidae. In the surveyed area, 24 species were found listed in the Red List of Threatened Species in the Czech Republic (CR – 1 species, EN – 2 species, VU – 15 species, LC – 6 species). In general, we discovered a  substantially diversified spider community with a large presence of rare and endangered species characteristic for open and xeric habitats.

We investigated spider fauna in 6 substitute birch stands in northern Bohemia between 1988 and 1998 in areas destroyed by air pollution. Spiders were caught using either pitfall traps or photoeclectors and each collecting method was evaluated separately. The comparison of results from year 1988 and year 1998 showed an increase in number of individuals but not in number of species. Although no clear trends were found when comparing the data by biodiversity indexes, two distinct clusters separating localities in 1988 and 1998 were found when comparing spider communities by Soerensen's index and cluster analysis. Based on these data we identified species mainly responsible for such changes. Our stud y shows that although biodiversity evaluated by biodiversity indexes and number of species was not changed during ten years of succession, progressive changes in the spider community occur in its structure at the level of single species.
