Wolbachia is known to manipulate a host’s reproduction to promote its own transmission. However, recent studies show that it can influence some behavioural processes in hosts, including personality, and personality-related behaviours. So far, information about the effects of Wolbachia infection on the host’s non-reproductive behaviours is still very limited. Here, we studied the effect of infection by Wolbachia on the personality, locomotion, capture rate, and pesticide exposure of the agriculturally important spider, Philodromus cespitum (Philodromidae). We assayed naturally-infected and uninfected individuals for the two personality traits boldness and aggressiveness. We also recorded the locomotion and capture rate of each spider. All individuals were then tested for pesticide avoidance. We found that Wolbachia-infected (no Cardinium detected) individuals were bolder but less aggressive than uninfected ones. The presence of Wolbachia did not affect personality consistency nor capture rate or locomotion; however, it hampered the ability of the spider to avoid a pesticide-treated surface. We conclude that the alteration of personality may not bring a direct transmission benefit to Wolbachia; however, Wolbachia still causes changes in the spider’s ability to perceive pesticide, which might likely be a side effect rather than a result of manipulation.

During the ethological research of Larinia elegans on Nové Mlýny dam in South Moravia, several spiders were collected, among which we highlight rare philodromids associated with wet biotopes, Philodromus poecilus and Philodromus marmoratus. Theridion familiare was caught in a mobile home near the dam, which is the first record for Czechia.

Populations of generalist predators are often comprised of a mixture of specialist and generalist individuals and this intraspecific variation in prey utilization may affect pest suppression. However, little is known about seasonal changes in prey utilization by generalist predators, especially during winter, when some generalist predators exert strong biocontrol effects. We used prey preference experiments on Philodromus cespitum (Araneae: Philodromidae) and molecular gut-content analyses of Philodromus spp. (dominated 85% by Philodromus cespitum) to study the dynamics of spider specialization in a pear orchard during the non-growing season. In the laboratory, Philodromus cespitum preferred springtails (Collembola) over the pear psylla, Cacopsylla pyri, an important pest of pear. The presence of springtails in guts of Philodromus spp. did not affect detection of psylla by molecular gut-content analysis in specimens collected from the pear orchard. The philodromid population comprised of a mixture of specialists and generalists in winter, but was composed mainly of generalists in spring. Greater variation in prey utilization during winter most likely reflects a patchy distribution of prey and philodromids switching to a less active hunting mode. Seasonal specialization of individual generalist predators could be the result of their ability to change hunting mode in response to changing environmental conditions and prey distribution. Our study demonstrates that alternative (collembolan) prey are unlikely to affect philodromid predation on psyllids and suggests that changes occur in the spatial structure of predator-pest interactions from winter to spring.

Insecticide formulations can cause mortality in natural enemies or have sublethal effects on them, which include alterations in their behaviour and development. Here, we investigated the effect of a bioinsecticide (azadirachtin) and predator cues on mating in a biocontrol spider, Philodromus cespitum. Firstly, adult males were exposed to cues from ants (as predators) or conspecific juveniles (as controls) and those from virgin adult females combined with insecticide residues and we then recorded their selection of the respective surfaces. In an insecticide-free environment, males spent significantly more time on the surface with cues from juveniles and virgin females than on the surface with cues from ants and virgin females. In the environment with ant cues, males did not spend significantly more time on the surface treated with water or insecticide residues. Secondly, adult male and female spiders were exposed to cues from predators and conspecifics and fresh insecticide residuals and we recorded mating behaviour. The presence of ant cues nor the presence of insecticide residues had a significant effect on the mating behaviour. However, the frequency of females biting males was significantly lower on the surface with insecticide residues and ant cues and highest on the surface with ant cues and water treatment. The size of mating plugs (applied to female genitals by males during mating) was not different between ant cues and control, but the plugs were significantly larger on the surface with insecticide residues. We conclude that azadirachtin affected only slightly the perception of predation risk and consequently mating behaviour in Philodromus cespitum. Similarly, presence of ant cues had little effect on mating.

The goals of this study are 1) to present the results of a new faunistic survey carried out during short, mainly spring vacation trips, through four years (2012–2014 and 2017) in different sites in Albania; 2) to present digital images of some poorly illustrated and difficult to identify species; 3) to make a contribution to the available knowledge of the Albanian spider fauna. Despite the material being collected without prior methodology and almost exclusively by hand, overall, 1231 individuals were collected and identified. A total of 242 species were registered, belonging to 131 genera and 30 families. Two species (Philodromus buchari Kubcová 2004 and Synema ornatum (Thorell, 1875)) are reported for the first time from the Balkan Peninsula, and 67 species and 15 genera are the first records for Albania. Thus, the actual number of Albanian spiders increased to 569 species.

Seminatural habitats adjacent to crops often increase density and diversity of pests’ natural enemies in crops. However, there is no research investigating the effect of seminatural habitats on the intraspecific variation in functional traits of the pests’ natural enemies in agricultural landscapes, despite its significant impact on pest control. Here, we investigated whether there is intraspecific variation in functional traits of a potential biocontrol agent, the generalist spider Philodromus cespitum, depending on the location in an agricultural landscape. We compared size, capture rate, and fundamental trophic niche of Philodromus cespitum along five transects (60 m) each consisting of three plots: hedgerow adjacent to an apple orchard, orchard edge, and orchard centre. The individuals from the orchard centers were larger than the individuals from orchard edges and hedgerows. Large individuals from the orchard centers had higher capture rate than large individuals from hedgerows but in small individuals it was the opposite. The adult females from the centers had a wider trophic niche than those from hedgerows, indicating higher foraging opportunism. The individuals from orchard edges had moderate phenotype in both trophic traits. The individuals from the orchard edges were also the most heterogeneous in body size and capture rate. The results show a clear edge effect which means that the hedgerows influenced the intraspecific functional composition in the orchard. As the intraspecific variation can interact with the species’ densities in influencing pest control, ignoring the intraspecific variation in the agricultural landscape and crops may lead to an inaccurate inference about the biocontrol services provided by spiders.

Female mating history can have a strong effect on male fertilization success. Although males often prefer to mate with virgin females, they often also engage with mated females. As the intensity of sperm competition can differ among mated females, males are expected to evolve means to identify their status. In spiders, males often use female silk to gather information about female quality. Males of many spider species deposit mating plugs into female genitalia to hinder further copulations. We tested whether males of the foliage‐dwelling, plug‐producing spider Philodromus cespitum, which is an important natural enemy of pests, discriminate between females of different mating status and whether they can determine the extent of genital plugging in mated females solely on the basis of cues gained from deposited female silk. We presented males with draglines of females that varied in either mating status (virgin vs. mated), the extent of plugging (small vs. big plug), or the age of the plug (fresh vs. old plug) and examined their mate preferences.  Additionally, we tested whether males were attracted to volatile cues produced by female bodies. Our experiments revealed that males preferred draglines of virgin females to those of mated females, and mated females with small plugs to those with large plugs. They were also attracted to female volatile cues. This study suggests that males are able to extract fine‐scale information on mating status from female draglines.

Pavouci byli získávání pomocí dvou odchytových metod, metodou sklepávání a metodou výběru z kartonových pásů (pastí). Sklepávání proběhlo v rámci výzkumu celkem čtyřikrát, konkrétně 11. 5. 2017, 14. 6. 2017, 1. 8. 2017 a 18. 9. 2017.

června 2017 uspořádalo Oblastní muzeum v Mostě arachnologické exkurze do nejbližšího okolí Mostu a Chomutova, kterých se zúčastnili členové České arachnologické společnosti.

Even though pesticides can have various sublethal effects on behaviour of biocontrol agents, no study to date has investigated the effects of pesticides on the prey choice of generalist predators. Prey choice of generalist predators is among key factors determining the predation pressure they exert on pests, because it influences fitness of predators and consequently their densities and per capita capture rate. Here, we investigated the effect of Integro (a.i. methoxyfenozide) and SpinTor 480 Sc (a.i. spinosad) on prey choice and predatory activity of the spider Philodromus cespitum, which is known significantly to reduce hemipteran and dipteran pests in fruit orchards. We compared the prey preferences of philodromids between the psyllid pest Cacopsylla pyri (Hemiptera, Psyllidae) and beneficial Theridion sp. spiders in laboratory experiments. We found that both pesticides altered the prey preferences of philodromids. While the philodromids in a control treatment preferred theridiid spiders over the psyllid pest, philodromids in the pesticide treatments exhibited no significant prey preferences. The changes in prey preferences were caused by increased predation on the psyllids, while the predation on the theridiid remained similar. We suggest that the changes in prey preferences might theoretically be due to 1) impaired sensory systems, 2) altered taste, and/or 3) altered mobility. In combination with other studies finding reduced predation on fruit flies in Philodromus cespitum after exposure to SpinTor, our results indicate that the sublethal effects of pesticides on predatory behaviour of generalist predators can depend on prey type and/or prey community composition.

Behavioral syndromes, seen as correlations among two or more functionally different behaviors, are well documented in many different animal taxa. They may not be present automatically, however, and their  consistency within populations and individuals also varies among studies. Here, we studied a behavioral syndrome comprising foraging aggressiveness and boldness/shyness and its time consistency in the cursorial spider Philodromus albidus. We measured foraging aggressiveness as the number of prey killed per 2-hour period. Boldness/shyness was assessed as a latency of initiating exploration in a novel environment. We  found the presence of the behavioral syndrome in Philodromus albidus, as bold individuals were also more aggressive than were shy individuals. The syndrome was consistent through time within the population but not  consistent for individuals. We further discuss the possible causes of the pattern.

Abstract The impact of five selective insecticides on the functional response of a potential biological control agent, the spider Philodromus cespitum (Walckenaer) (Araneae: Philodromidae), was studied in the laboratory. This spider is the most abundant beneficial arthropod on trees in commercial orchards in central Europe. We expected that selective insecticides applied at the recommended doses would have no effect or a negligible effect on the spiders’ performance. Our results showed that the mortality of spiders resulting from residual uptake of the chem- icals differed among insecticides. Dimilin, NeemAzal, Mospilan, and Integro caused mortality of less than 10%, while SpinTor caused mortality of 17%. All five preparations can be considered harmless in terms of mortality in comparison with Decis, which caused 80% mortality. Exposure to residues of NeemAzal, SpinTor, and Dimilin resulted in a significantly lower predation rate than the control. The lowest predation rate was observed in spiders treated with SpinTor. These results imply that the natural pest control provided by Philodromus cespitum spiders can be weakened by the application of SpinTor, NeemAzal, and Dimilin. On the other hand, the functional response was not significantly affected by the application of Integro and Mospilan. Therefore, these two insecticides are recommended for use in the integrated pest management (IPM) of orchards.
