This study summarizes the results of a survey of spiders (Araneida) in the protected finding site of Urpfn near Banská Bystrica. From a total of 2414 spiders collected during field surveys of this territory in 1973, 1975—1976 and 1981, the author determined 280 species systematically belonging to 28 families and 138 genera. Predominant in the spider fauna of the territory surveyed are thermophilous species of the steppe and forest-steppe character and species of warm oak and oak-hornbeam forests, which is related to the original natural conditions, while mountain species are limited to the habitat of beech forest growths, eventually to their marginal zone, or to other habitat formations on northerly exposed slopes. Several of the rarer Pontic and Mediterranean species, whose occurrence on the surveyed territory has been confirmed, penetrate here from the Panno- nian hollow and thrive on exposed forest-steppe habitats or on the edge of preserved thermophilous oak forest growths with a calcareous-dolomite substrate. The region of the territory under study represents the northernmost limit of the spread of these rare thermophilous species of spiders on the territory of Slovakia.
From a faunistic point of view, the most significant are finds of the species: Abacoproeces ascitus, Acartauchenius scurrilis, Alopecosa fabrilis, Argiope bruennichii, Atypus affinis, Bathyphante gracilis, Gentromerus capucinus, Geto laticeps, Ghiracanthium pennyi, Dipoena erythropus, Drassodes villosus, Dysdera longirostris, Eresus niger, Erigonoplus jarmilae, Ero aphana, Haplodrassus dalmatensis, Harpactes saevus, Hyctia nivoyi, Leptyphantes angulipalpis, Leptyphantes keyserlingi, Leptyphantes zimmermanni, Metopobactrus rayi, Micaria formicaria, Micaria guttulata, Micariólepis dives, Panamomops fagei, Pardosa bifasciata, Phrurolithus minimus, Poecilochroa conspicua, Silometopus elegans, Tetrillus arietinus, Typhochrestus digitatus, Walckenaeria (Walckenaeria) simplex, Xysticus ferrugineus, Xysticus striatipes, Zelotes aurantiacus, Zelotes gracilis, Zora pardalis and Zygiella thorelli.
Of these, the finding of the species Dysdera longirostris is the first on the territory of Czechoslovakia, further 3 soecues (Gentromerus capucinus, Harpactes saevus and Micaria guttulata) are new to the fauna of Slovakia.
